Recursion in PD

I came across this set of recursion examples in PD and thought it would be of good help to those of you who need some help with the recursion assignment. It's brought to us by ClaudiusMaximus, the person who's sound & graphic videos were shown in class. Unfortunately the links to the actual PD patches are broken.

Here are some more examples of recursion from another author.

Pd vid mix R

I found this video quite helpful as it is slow and step by step in process of how to make a video mixer in PD. The author explains everything done so well i found myself learning about the types of different boxes and what they do, not just how to create a video mixer. Overall i think the end result could be quite useful. Simple as it is, its a very achievable patch that could be cool to try to mess around with.

BigDob Robot Army

I found this "dog" robot very interesting because it doesn't tip over. It's amazing how developed microcontrollers have become.

Autechre "Gantz Graf" video by Chris Cunningham

I think this far exceeds anything any of us could do in class, or even within the next few years given enough diligence, but it's a pretty amazing example of audio and video sync. I wish I could find a higher quality video to share because the interplay between sound and video is ridiculously perfect. Either the video and audio were made together in the same programming environment or the video artist just had a lot of patience. It's been around for a few years so this may be old for some of you since Chris Cunningham is pretty well known for his music videos.

Basic geometric shapes incorporated with sound. I believe this is a great example of work that reflects what Browning has presented

pdPod

pdPod allows the creation of interactive musical applications for the iPod. It integrates Pure Data (http://crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/software.html ) a visual sound programming language by Miller Puckette which allows the rapid development of musical applications. Guenter Geiger (http://gige.xdv.org/ ) has made PDa (http://gige.xdv.org/pda/ ), a port of Pure Data for PDA Linux devices which we recently adapted to run under iPod Linux as well. Martin Kaltenbrunner (http://modin.yuri.at/ ) created a GUI application which allows the execution, display and control of PD patches on the iPod. This application was made by the creators of the reacTable at the Music Technology Group (http://mtg.upf.edu/) at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain.

This instrument was made possible thanks to the efforts of the iPodLinux (http://ipodlinux.org ) project, which provides a Linux environment for the iPod. pdPod itself can be downloaded from its WIKI page (http://ipodlinux.org/Pdpod )

3d VR in Traverse City

Mainly because I'm from Michigan, too...although whoever posted this video doesn't know how to spell Urbana-Champaign.

I like it in part because it emphasizes and enhances the idea of sharing; you don't even have to be in the same city to collaborate.

This is a pretty cool audiovisual video of someone using pd. I like the visual effects of it and the sounds it makes itself. It actually starts off with a very enjoyable rhythm and than kind of just gets crazy from there. But aside from that it's very visually entertaining. I don't know what patch he used though

Kisai Keisan LED watch

This is an aluminum watch that displays the time (and date) using a series of colored LED lights. The numbers are displayed in four vertical columns that contain the appropriate numbers. If the number is too high (like 7), there will be two numbers in a column the wearer must add together (3+4). There is a clear animation of this on the website, which is linked to the title of this post. More interestingly, the website states an animation has been programmed into the watch to move the lights in a sweeping fashion across the watch every twelve minutes. This kind of action triggered at a certain time reminded me of the bangs and timers we attach to patches in PD Gem.

Multitouch responsive interface for computer-based music

Multitouch Prototype 2 from Randy Jones on Vimeo.
One of the biggest points of interest for me is interface design, more specifically for synthesizers and computers. The keyboard concept is over 600 years old, so why is it still the main choice for modern synthesizers? This type of alternative interface is a nice move in the right direction, allowing for a means of physical expression that has generally eluded electronic musicians.

Electroplankton Experiment #1 with PD Pure Data Software

I thought this experiment was cool, because it uses audio as well as interactive simulation. It uses the pure data software that we use in class and created this video game like picture. I like the fact the pen controls when the sounds are announced and the where the objects move. However, I do think it was a little long to get the point across, but very cool designs.

Etch-A-Sketch Clock

Found this a while back. i thought it was a cool experiment but a really stupid idea because who has time to wait a full 20 secs for a EAS to draw out the time. I'm unsure whether pure data was used but it was built on Arduino which is a computing platform which can be used with various softwares including PD to create interactive devices like this one...

Ghost iPod

I thought this was particularly interesting because it relates not only what we've done in my responsive arts class, but it applies to the unexpected and the results are an amazing effect. My guess is that they used the accelerometer in the iPod touch to sync with the Pure Data audio. video

Mirror Sculpture

I found this sculpture to be very, very cool. I'm pretty new to this realm of art, so i can't really comment on any technical procedures, but I must say it's amazing what technology is doing in the arts today. I did do some research in Daniel Rozin, (the artist), who is the associate art professor at ITP and is the owner of Smoothware Design, which is a software company that designs tools for the interactive art community. Pretty sweet right? He has other sculptures much like "Mirrors Mirror" like one which uses wood, "The Wooden Mirror", instead of a mirror. In "wooden mirror" light sensitive cameras somehow transfer the captured image into the wood! Anyone know how that is done?!
